Thailand is the world’s largest exporter of rice. In 2007 Thailand exported a record 9.55 million tonnes of rice.

2008 will remain a seller’s market as global production of 420 million tonnes will fall short of demand of 423.9 million tonnes.

The Thai Foreign Trade Department predicted on 22nd September 2008 that Thai rice exports in 2009 would stay around 9 million to 9.5 million tonnes valued at between $4.95 billion and $5.22 billion. This year, rice shipments are forecast to reach 9.5 million to 10 million tonnes worth $5.79 billion to $6 billion.
