The Bangkok Shipowners and Agents Association

August 11th, 2008

This year marks a notable milestone for The Bangkok Shipowners and Agents Association (BSAA) as the association celebrates its 40th Anniversary.

The BSAA traces its origins back to 1968, when it was established to replace the Bangkok Shipping Interest, which consisted of a small group of shipping lines. At that time, the only recognised port in Thailand was the port in Khlong Toei District under the administration of the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT). The main role of BSAA was to act as a forum for local shipping lines and agencies to address maritime, transport and logistics issues and enhance good working relations with various government ministries concerned.

Today, BSAA members include not only shipping lines and agents, but also other related shipping service providers (i.e. logistics providers, port operators, trucking companies, law firms) that wish to closely associate with shipping agents and also have interests in maritime law, transportation management companies and other maritime related agencies.

Lessons from Google & Executive Training

Lessons from Google:

‘Never settle for the best’ is the motto that explains Google’s success. In elaborating on its philosophy, Google shares 10 things that it has found to be true:

In January, Fortune magazine named Google No 1 on its list of the Best Companies to Work for in the United States of America. The Google Story by David Vise and Mark Malseed, tells the story behind the company’s success. Blogger Vaughn Dickson summarieses 14 learning points from the book:

NIH (Not Invented here): When founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google in 1998, they tried to sell the product to many people. They wanted to earn $1 million and finish their PhD’s. One of the potential buyers was Altavista, the search engine that belonged to Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). However, DEC’s engineers believed that whatever was NIH would not work for the company. They refused to buy Google. Later DEC was merged with Compaq, which now is HP.

When the founders recruited CEO Eric Schmidt, one of the reasons they selected him was because he had failed before. As an executive at Sun Microsystems, he had lost a product battle with Microsoft. They like the idea of fighting the giant. They bought Eric’s “mistake” experience.

The three executives maximise each other’s strengths.
